Wayne Goes Cycling to Raise Money for Soldiers Heart!

In mid June, Tariffville resident Wayne Coste begins a 4,200 mile, coast-to-coast bicycle trip across America to raise money and awareness of veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. In 64 days, he will traverse 13 states and a Canadian province, averaging 65 miles per day, under his own power.

The War Stops Here
A New Blog

This blog is intended to be a regularly updated hub for those who take anti-war work seriously and want to learn what other people are doing, and to let new people know that there are ways to tangibly grind this war to a halt.

The main purpose is to put forward the alternatives that have been advocated for a long time; that are now taking shape. It's really a wonderful time to be a part of this movement; it is not hard to feel a re-awakening and a shift in movement politics. The time when a handful of groups and individuals can monopolize the direction of the movement is coming to a close.

Then Call!

• Participate in a phone lobbying effort on that same day - call your Congress member and Senators.
• A new political strategy for Iraq should include:
  Set a Date for U.S. Withdrawal: The U.S. should name a date certain for withdrawal of all U.S. military forces and bases.
• Negotiate an Iraqi National Compact: One key to ending the war in Iraq is bringing nationalist resistance fighters back to the negotiating table. All Iraqis must a have a stake in the peace process.
• Convene a Regional Process for Stability in Iraq: Success in Iraq will depend on the engagement of its neighbors-including Syria and Iran-in planning and implementing a successful U.S. withdrawal and the stabilization of Iraq.
• Underwriting Reconstruction with U.S. Dollars: U.S. military forces and bases must leave Iraq, but the U.S. should not abandon the Iraqi people. The U.S. should work with Iraqis and their neighbors to establish a plan for U.S. financing of the reconstruction of Iraq.

Recent polling has shown that the number of Iraqis that support attacks against US and British troops has increased dramatically from about 40 percent in January 2006 to over 60 percent in September 2006. I'm afraid that it may even be higher now.

"Although national security is widely perceived to depend on military strength, more weapons do not provide enduring security. Military expansion provokes fear and potential retaliation. Threats tend to increase the hostility and distrust that lead to war. We believe that nations must move toward comprehensive disarmament. We urge multilateral disarmament, supported by the conversion of military industries to the production of civilian goods and services, and the retraining of personnel toward that end. We also advocate that the United States take unilateral steps toward its own disarmament, believing that other nations will respond affirmatively to this example. The risks of disarmament are far smaller than the risks involved in the current course of weapons stockpiling and development."
